Federal organizations struggling to keep up with advances in BYOD, mobility

Bring your own device (BYOD), and workplace mobility offer numerous benefits for an organization, but as they rapidly evolve, these solutions can be tricky to deploy without help. Arecent study by nCircle, an information risk and security performance management firm, found that 82 percent of federal agencies have a mobility or BYOD solution and related security policy in place, but 62 percent are struggling to keep up with the new devices being brought in every day.

Introducing personal devices to the workplace can provide a number of benefits, from increased productivity to reduced IT costs, but these solutions have to be approached and managed properly to get the full effect.

“In the current economic and political environment, IT initiatives perceived to cut agency costs, like cloud migration and BYOD, are moving forward rapidly and require increased focus from agency IT security personnel,” said Keren Cummins, director of federal markets for nCircle. “These same professionals report a disconnect between the pace at which these initiatives are evolving and agencies’ ability to effectively secure them. Given the rapid changes in agency IT environments driven by the push to cut costs, it’s easy to understand why compliance is an increasing concern.”

Deploying BYOD and still maintaining the status of a risk-free environment is difficult, but it is possible with the right tools and approach.

This means finding a solution that fits with both the organization’s IT infrastructure and the devices those employees are using to do their jobs. A great way to accomplish this is to implement virtualization and an HTML5-based RDP client. With a browser-based RDP client like Ericom’s AccessNow, a business can provide secure access to remote or virtualized data, applications and desktops without limiting employees’ choice in devices. As a clientless client, anHTML5 RDP client, doesn’t require any software or plugins installed on the end-user device. Professionals can then access these organizational resources that are hosted in an organization’s data center or in the cloud, rather than spread out across numerous devices, which may be lost, stolen or otherwise compromised.
