IT Departments are Werewolves

Why would I say this? Quite simply, when I first started out over a decade ago, there was constant talk of silver bullets, a trend that continues to this day. Now I know that the IT industry is notorious for TLA (or Three-Letter-Acronyms) but the silver bullet, (most famous for being the only thing that can kill a werewolf), just seemed a little strange. Delving into the etymology of the phrase, it does appear to have been perverted along the way with the meaning ultimately trying to be representative of simplicity and a catch-all. Having a single solution and a fix for all of your challenges would be wonderful, though sadly, the reality is usually far from simple.

Now, before I get accused of being a doom-and-gloom merchant, there are signs that things are starting to get better. Take the Chromebook as an example – a fantastic piece of technology, allowing you to get online at a very low cost point. However, when you think of the Chromebook, you don't readily associate this with being an enterprise device – you aren't able to install too much onto the device, and therefore its use is limited to just organisations that have gone 'Google'... Right?

The key here is around application access; working out how to deliver an application to that device whilst accommodating the lack of installing software onto it. How about we just leverage technology that is ALREADY installed on the device, notably a web-browser

At Ericom Software, we recognised the power of HTML5 a number of years ago and have since been pioneering the use of the browser to deliver applications with our AccessNow product. Instead of installing anything onto the device, you open up your browser and within a few seconds you are accessing your line-of-business applications. Additionally, by delivering applications in this way, you simplify the administration of the endpoint (to virtually zero),.

Think it sounds too good to be true? That I'm just going to be another one of those guys who promises the earth and delivers nothing? Check out AccessNow for yourself. It'll only take a minute or two. – if we can’t do what I’ve just said, I’ll personally give you some silver….and you can create some silver bullets…
