Mobile workforce gets a boost with new tools

As more professionals use smartphones, tablets and other devices for work, the enterprise applications market is growing in strength as well. According to a recent study by Frost & Sullivan, many businesses are planning to introduce mobile software solutions, including asset tracking, sales force automation, workforce management and communications, within the next 12 months. As always with enterprise mobile trends, security and reliability will be key in any investment.

Though many businesses are deploying BYOD solutions, the actual uses of consumer mobile devices in the workplace vary from industry to industry. Some fields find them virtually useless, while smartphones and tablets have revolutionized the way business is conducted in others. However, any business that has invested in BYOD agrees that security is a top priority.

Whether implementing a mobile device solution for enhanced workforce management or as an improved collaboration tool for employees, a business has to keep any company-owned data and applications safe from loss, unauthorized access and other dangers. Consumers lose their wireless devices with alarming frequency. They may also be stolen or left unprotected from hackers. But with the right tools and training these risks can be eliminated, ensuring a successful and secure mobile strategy.

One way for any business to protect its digital property from these risks is by implementing virtualization and remote access solutions. Company data and applications are hosted on a local server and employees access them through a display protocol, such as an RDP client, rather than downloading them to their own devices. Even if a device is stolen or accessed by unauthorized parties, data can remain safe on the company server, protected by additional layers of security.

While secure, centrally managed RDP-based access is an excellent way to improve BYOD security, a business should also invest in improving employee training regarding their personal devices. Mindfulness and personal security are the first lines of defense when it comes to keeping company data protected, and while technology helps, it isn’t a replacement for responsibility.
