More Information About Windows Server 2008 Release Schedule

About three weeks ago I posted about the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 release date. Recently some more information regarding Microsoft’s release schedule came to my attention thanks to this blog post. Three days ago at Microsoft Show and Tell (Financial Analyst Meeting), 2007 Steve Ballmer presented, amongst other things, Microsoft’s product roadmap. According to this presentation, after they release Windows Server 2008, Microsoft plans to release Windows Small Business Server (“Cougar”), followed by Windows Server for Midrange (“Centro”),. After this they will release Windows Vista SP1, followed by Windows Server 2008 Update Release and finally Windows Server 2008 SP1. Quit a busy year I must say.

This slide also contains references to System Center Virtual Machine Manager, which is the management component for both Virtual Server 2005 and Windows Server 2008 Virtualization (Veridian),. Regarding Windows Server 2008 Virtualization, I’ve already noted Microsoft’s statements that it will be released with within 180 days of Windows Server 2008 release. Interestingly, it does not appear explicitly on Ballmer’s slide. This has raised speculation that maybe it will be a part of Windows Server 2008 Update Release. If that is indeed the case then Windows Server 2008 SP1 may be released later than I originally anticipated, maybe around the end of 2008 (also note that Ballmer’s slide is entitled “FY08 and Beyond“),

Guess we we will have to wait and see.

Update:
This article on CNET News quotes Windows Server general manager Bill Laing at the Windows Hardware and Engineering Conference (WinHEC), saying that Windows Server 2008 R2 will be released in 2009. I’m unsure what that means regarding Windows Server 2008 Update Release and Windows Server 2008 SP1. Laing also said that Windows Server 2008 will be the last server operating system to come in a 32-bit version. Windows Server 2008 R2 will be offered only in a 64-bit version.
