North Greenville University Enjoys Browser-Based Access to IBM SPSS, CAMS ERP from Three Rivers Systems, and Other Windows Applications
Ericom HTML5-Based Access Technology Helps University Manage BYOD, Security and Distance Education Initiatives
Closter, N.J. (May 13, 2014),– Ericom Software, a global leader in application access and desktop virtualization solutions, announced today that North Greenville University (NGU), has selected Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect with HTML5 access technology to provide students, faculty and staff with browser-based access to hosted Windows applications. NGU is utilizing Ericom to drive key initiatives at the university such as BYOD and distance education which require easy access to a broad range of applications from all types of devices.
Situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, NGU is comprised of three campuses and two distinct user communities – 2,500 students as well as 500 administrative, faculty and staff. Each user community requires access to a mix of applications such as IBM’s SPSS predictive analytics software, Microsoft Office and various modules of Campus Academic Management System (CAMS) an ERP solution for higher education by Three Rivers Systems.
“Because of BYOD, security is a big concern; we needed a solution for delivering browser-based access to Windows applications, while also reducing our total dependence on Microsoft Terminal Server and VDI solutions, which can be complex to manage and use”, explained Tim Patterson, Network Services Manager at North Greenville University. “Ericom offered a brilliant way to solving the problem”.
NGU will also embark on a major distance education initiative over the next 24-36 months. To support the anticipated growth in student enrollment, Ericom was selected over Citrix, VMware View and another HTML5 solution citing its ease-of use and effortless deployment.
“From the moment we started using Ericom, it was a breath of fresh air for us”, explained Patterson. “With a small team and limited resources to support thousands of users across the campus, PowerTerm WebConnect's ease of use and configuration allowed us to realize an immediate return on our investment, not just in cost savings but also in time. Additionally, as the HTML5-based access eliminates the need to install and maintain local client software, our students, faculty and staff get a consistent experience across all of their devices”.
Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect is an advanced connection broker that provides secure, centrally managed access to desktops, applications, files and content on a wide range of platforms including Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Servers), and desktop virtualization (VDI), platforms. PowerTerm WebConnect’s HTML5 technology serves as a browser-based remote desktop gateway that supports all major Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
Ilan Paretsky, Ericom Software’s VP of Marketing, commented: “North Greenville University is yet another example of how higher education institutions can achieve unprecedented cost savings and efficiencies while delivering users with ubiquitous access to Windows desktops and applications across an array of endpoint devices. We look forward to collaborating with NGU as they roll out their distance education program.
