It’s been a while since I’ve written about the Microsoft release schedule. A recent public letter from Bill Veghte, Microsofts Senior Vice President, Online Services & Windows Business Group, to the Windows community at large has prompted me to address this topic again.

First, though, it’s worth mentioning that Microsoft have released Hyper-V, their new virtualization platform. This release comes 4 months after the release of Windows Server 2008, earlier than many people anticipated (Microsoft originally promised to release Hyper-V with 180 days of Windows Server 2008),. And you can start using Hyper-V for VDI (Desktop Virtualization), right now with Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect.

Another point worth mentioning, from Bill Veghte’s letter, is that yesterday was the official “end of sales” date for Windows XP. Despite this Microsoft will continue to sell Windows XP Home and Starter editions until January 31st, 2009. If you need Windows XP Professional you will be required to purchase Windows Vista Business, and then exercise your “downgrade rights” and install Windows XP Professional on your system. You will later be able to switch back to Windows Vista without paying for an upgrade. Support for Windows XP will be available until April, 2014.

Finally, Bill Veghte writes that Microsoft has set January 2010 at the tentative release date for “Windows 7″, the codename for the next major release of Windows.
