The Secret To Being First

In a previous post I boasted about PowerTerm WebConnect being the first Server Based Computing solution to support both Windows Server 2003 x64 and Windows Server 2008. In this post I’ll let you in on our secret in being able integrate with these platforms so quickly. There are, in fact, three ingredients to our secret recipe:

The first ingredient is our relationship with Microsoft. Ericom Software is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, a Terminal Services Partner, and we participate in Microsoft Technology Adaptation Program (TAP),. As a result, we get early exposure to new Microsoft technologies as well as direct contact to their R&D. This helps us get quick answers and verify compatibility between our products and theirs early on.

The second ingredient is our utilization of Microsoft services. Our approach is to utilize and leverage the Microsoft infrastructure to the greatest extent possible. This enables us to concentrate our efforts on providing real value-adds instead of duplicating Microsoft R&D effort. A classic example is our use of RDP instead of developing our own proprietary remoting protocol. We extend RDP with seamless windows, content redirection, graphics performance enhancements and bandwidth reduction, and more, but we do it in a way that is totally compatible with the RDP specification. This way when Microsoft releases a new version there are few, if any, compatibility issues.

The third ingredient is our Three Tier Architecture. We separated the Connection Broker, the central component that performs user authentication, configuration and license management, and load balancing, from the Terminal Servers. This architecture simplifies the product and makes it easier for us to update and enhance it. To learn more about this architecture and its benefits listen to my podcast interviews on Brian Madden Live or DABCC Radio.

As a result of the last two ingredients, PowerTerm WebConnect only requires the installation of a small agent on each Terminal Server, less than 2MB on disk. This agent does not replace any standard Windows component and does not modify the logon process. It uses only standard APIs that have been officially documented by Microsoft. The upshot of this is that this agent requires little or no modifications to support new versions of Windows Terminal Services.

Our bragging rights are your benefit because when you install PowerTerm WebConnect you are assured of getting the best possible compatibility with present and future versions of Microsoft Windows Terminal Services.
