City governments see impressive savings with BYOD

Local governments in major cities across the nation are looking to bring your own device (BYOD), policies to increase productivity and efficiency in their offices, reduce overtime and decrease IT budgets, according to a recent study by the Center for Digital Government. In its 12th annual Digital Cities Survey, the center found that more cities are embracing BYOD solutions for cost savings and service improvements, as well as other benefits. The survey included cities with populations over 30,000, and was split into four categories based on size.

“Cities that are investing in technology are seeing huge cost savings that are critical to operations and their ability to meet higher demand for services,” Todd Sander, executive director for the Center, said. “These cities are true innovators and we applaud them as they work in the spirit of collaboration to provide extraordinary value to constituents despite budget setbacks.”

The Louisville Metro Government, Kentucky, Salt Lake City, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Marana, Arizona, all won first place for BYOD deployment and digital solutions in their respective size categories, ranging from 250,000+, 125,000 to 249.999, 75,000 to 124,999, and 30,000 to 74,999. Other cities, such as Boston, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Roanoke, Virginia were also mentioned.

BYOD provides important solutions for many organizations looking to increase productivity while reducing hardware budgets. In order to implement a successful BYOD strategy, however, a business need to invest in the right tools to make it effective and secure. One of the best ways to do this is remote access.

With RDP-based access tools, such as Ericom’s AccessNow, an organization can embrace BYOD without limiting employee’s personal device options, restricting data or application access, or putting itself at security risk. By creating a remote access portal for workers to access data and applications but not download them to their personal device, a business eliminates the risk that its digital resources could be lost or stolen due to device negligence.
